Blessing of Children

Blessing of Children

We consider it both a privilege and special responsibility to partner with you in the spiritual nurture of your child.  We look forward to sharing with you and your family in a service of celebration  for your child or children.

We understand that families bringing their children to our church come from a variety of backgrounds and many different stages in their faith journey. Consequently, we offer three similar but slightly different services. The services are outlined below. We trust you will find one, which is appropriate for you.

Service of Blessing
In this service, we ask God’s blessing on your child and family, and welcome them into the life of our church. The questions asked of parents in the blessing service do not assume personal faith in Jesus Christ or active participation in the life of the church. But we do encourage you to continue to explore your beliefs with our support, so that you can guide your child and answer his or her questions as they grow up.

Service of Blessing and Thanksgiving
In this service, we ask God’s blessing on your child and family, and welcome them into the life of our church. The questions asked of parents in this service assume personal faith in Jesus Christ and that you are already actively participating in the life of our church through its worship, teaching and fellowship. Christian parents often choose this service so that their child can be baptized later in life as a public expression of faith.

Service of Baptism
In this service, we ask God’s blessing on your child and family, and welcome them into the life of our church. The questions asked of parents in this service assume personal faith in Jesus Christ and that you are already actively participating in the life of our church through its worship, teaching and fellowship. The sign of water is used as a symbol of God’s cleansing and renewing power.

These services involve the whole community of faith, partnering with your family and promising its support. For the local congregation this involves providing ongoing pastoral care and Christian nurture.  For parents, it involves offering your child the opportunity to engage with God and the Christian community. For this reason, we encourage families to make contact with a church in their local area, and attend services as part of our weekend worship.

Under special circumstances, we may be able to accommodate those who live outside our area. However, to ensure that there is an opportunity for ongoing pastoral support we ask that that you obtain a letter from your local congregation. They will then be able to support you in bringing up your children to know and love God, a challenging task in our changing world. Please call the office to make an appointment with one of our pastors. When they meet with you they will discuss the meaning of each service and answer any questions you may have. They will also be happy to assist you in deciding which service most appropriately reflects your personal faith and family needs.
